AES - Automated Essay Scoring System is a system with a technological cycle that includes the organization and conduct of the process of evaluating essays based on criteria in online and offline modes, and the audit of the activities of markers participating in the verification process. This evaluation system, developed and used by the State Examination Center for checking essays in various exams, has been granted a certificate of registration (patent) by the Intellectual Property Agency.

It should be reminded that this patent is the basis for applying for international patent candidacy for the evaluation system.

AES is built on the principles of transparency, objectivity, and efficiency. The system consists of the following main stages:

  • Selection of markers who will participate in the verification process, organization of theoretical and practical training for them;
  • Preparation of the base for the calibration stage (selection of benchmark essays for each task and improvement of evaluation criteria);
  • Calibration stage before the verification process;
  • Verification process;
  • Appeal process;
  • Audit of markers' activities.

The development of the Automated Essay Scoring System began in 2014. Research related to the evaluation of essays from monitoring exams conducted in grades V-XI of the republic was carried out during 2014-2017, and during this period, both the methodology and software of AES were developed. Starting from 2017, the checking of essays for general secondary (9-year) education, and starting from 2019, for full secondary (11-year) education levels, and starting from 2019, the checking of essays for admission exams to the bachelor's level of higher education institutions are carried out through this system. Currently, AES evaluates essays and compositions (essays) for the following exams:

  • Graduation exams for general secondary education level (9-year);
  • Graduation exams for full secondary education level (11-year);
  • Admission exams to the bachelor's level of higher education institutions (groups I-IV);
  • Admission exams to the master's level of higher education institutions, etc.

It should be noted that an article about AES was published in the journal "IFAC Papers online", and presentations about the system were made at the following international conferences:

  • The 43rd Annual Conference of the International Association for Educational Assessment on the theme "Assessment as a Social Ling", 2017, Batumi, Georgia;
  • The 45th Annual Conference of the International Association for Educational Assessment on the theme "Assessment and Decision Making: Individual and Institutional Solutions", 2019, Baku, Azerbaijan;
  • The 48th Annual Conference of the International Association for Educational Assessment on the theme "Digitalization of Exams and Qualifications", 2023, Kingston, Jamaica.

To date, more than 47 million (47000000) evaluations have been carried out in AES for various exams and subjects.
